A smartphone does not replace the 10x loupe or the gemological microscope, but it adds what they lack: adjustable built-in light, magnification up to 40x, and an instant photo of exactly what the jeweler saw. The loupe is the jeweler's first instrument and will stay that way. It is fast, optically excellent, and needs no battery. Setup for a stable image

Laser inscriptions
Many graded diamonds carry a laser inscription on the girdle with the report number. The characters are very small and sit on a narrow, often faceted, band. Reading them with a loupe takes practice; with a phone at 20x to 40x, side light, and a photo, it is a routine check at intake. Matching the inscription to the report is the fastest way to confirm a stone's identity before work begins.
Settings and wear
Most stone losses are preceded by visible wear that was missed. A regular setting check at 10x to 15x should cover:
- Prong tips. Look for tips worn thin, flattened, or lifted away from the stone, and for gaps between prong and crown. Press the stone gently with a fingernail while watching on screen; any movement is a finding.
- Channel and bead settings. Check that every stone sits level and that the channel walls or beads are intact. One shifted stone suggests others are loose.
- Bezels. Look for a gap between the bezel wall and the stone, and for cracks in the wall at the stone's corners.
- Shanks and galleries. Thin spots on the shank, cracks at the base of the head, and porosity in castings.
- Clasps and jump rings. Open jump rings and worn clasp tongues are the common failure points on chains and bracelets.
A photo of each finding, taken at intake and shown to the client, establishes the condition before your work starts and protects both parties if a stone is later lost.
Hallmarks and metal marks
Fineness marks tell you what you are working with: 925 for sterling silver, 585 for 14 karat gold, 750 for 18 karat, 950 or PLAT for platinum. Maker's marks, assay marks, and date letters can place a piece and affect its value. These stamps are often worn, partially struck, or in a tight spot inside a shank.
At 10x to 20x with raking light, a worn mark usually becomes legible. Photograph it rather than reading off the live view; you can then zoom into the still image and compare against a marks reference. Pearls, colored stones, and treatments
On pearls, surface blemishes, drill-hole condition, and nacre thickness at the drill hole are all visible at 10x to 20x. On colored stones, look for chips at facet junctions and abrasion on the table, which affect value and indicate how the piece has been worn.
Some treatments leave visible signs, such as glass-filled fractures in ruby showing a bluish flash, or the gas bubbles of glass imitations. A phone will show these to you, but confirming a treatment is laboratory work, and the phone image is a reason to refer the stone, not a conclusion.

- At intake, photograph the piece overall, then each stone at 10x, then any existing damage or wear.
