Features that matter

Getting a usable close-up of a live insect
Insects move, and zoom magnifies movement. A few things tip the odds in your favor.
- Go early. Insects are sluggish when cool. Early morning, especially after a cool night, is when they sit still.
- Approach slowly and avoid shadows. Your shadow falling across an insect is often what makes it fly.
- Start wide. Find it at 1x to 2x, then zoom in smoothly. Jumping to 30x and hunting for the subject wastes the moment.

Add a fourth photo with something for scale, such as a fingertip, a coin, or a ruler, and note where and when you found it. A ground beetle under a log in a damp wood in spring is a different candidate list from one on a sunny wall in late summer.

Safety and courtesy
Do not handle stinging insects, and treat any hairy caterpillar with caution, since some have irritating hairs. Put rocks and logs back the way you found them.
